"Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into are awake through years with transferred touch, and go on glowing for long years."

ABOUT SPIRIT OF THE WOOD
Spirit of the Wood is the work of woodturning artist, Pete Thompson, and is a blend of craft, creativity and art.
The name derives from the belief that each piece of wood retains the spirit of the tree from which it came, as shown in the growth patterns, the particular characteristics of the species itself, and also an indefinable and special quality that will be very
different even in sections taken from the same log.
This is vernacular art because most of the wood is sourced locally - foraged from the wild or rescued from being chipped or burnt. Each finished piece has its own unique, intrinsic beauty that is the result of an inseparable partnership between maker and material. The starting point is usually a section of unprocessed log, so the form is dictated as much by the wood itself as by the maker’s hand, reaffirming the artist's physical and spiritual connection to the land and locality.
My work has been exhibited in several exhibitions and galleries including The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, The Brynmor Jones Gallery at Hull University, Goole Museum and Doncaster Art Fair.
